A Toyota Premio car veered off the road and overturned near the Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya on the Ratnapura-Panadura road at dawn on November 2, 2026, after the driver suffered sudden microsleep.

The accident occurred around 5:45 AM on November 2, 2026, along the Ratnapura-Panadura (A8) main road in the vicinity of the historic Sabaragamuwa Maha Saman Devalaya. A white Toyota Premio (G Superior) car traveling along the route went out of control as the driver experienced a sudden moment of drowsiness. Losing control of the vehicle, the car veered to the right side of the road, crashing violently into a high roadside earth embankment and a rock before coming to a halt on its side. The severe impact caused extensive damage to the front bumper, headlights, chrome grille, windshield, left-side doors, and body panels of the vehicle. Fortunately, no oncoming traffic or pedestrians were present in the opposite lane at the exact moment of the crash, averting a major tragedy and ensuring the survival of the driver and occupants. Traffic police officers from the Ratnapura Headquarters Police Station are conducting further investigations into the incident. The Accident 1st team urges all motorists to remain vigilant regarding fatigue during early morning hours. Road Safety Takeaway: The hours between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM represent a high-risk window for microsleep and deep fatigue due to the human body's circadian rhythm. A mere 1-2 seconds of microsleep can cause a vehicle to drift into oncoming lanes or embankments. Drivers feeling drowsy must immediately pull over and rest. On roads flanked by natural rock and earth embankments, a vehicle running off the road faces a severe risk of rolling over. In the event of any emergency, always contact the Suwa Seriya 1990 ambulance service immediately.
