β Verified Incident Telemetry
A Suzuki Wagon R travelling along the Galle-Matara main road veered off and crashed into a store pillar at Dewata Junction in the early hours, injuring two women while six passengers, including two children, miraculously survived.
A serious road incident occurred in the early hours of today (31/10/2026) at approximately 1:00 AM near the Dewata Junction along the Galle-Matara Main Road (A2), when a car veered off the road and collided with a commercial establishment's supporting pillar, ultimately overturning.
According to telemetry and field reports, a black Suzuki Wagon R (FZ/FX) travelling along the route lost control, ploughed through an advertisement board and a heavy iron support pillar outside a roadside shop, and came to a halt after rolling onto its side. At the exact time of impact, the vehicle was carrying six occupants, including two young children. The collision triggered the vehicle's front SRS airbags, absorbing a significant portion of the kinetic energy, though the vehicle still sustained extensive damage to its front bumper, headlights, roof, side doors, and windshield.
Prompt action by area residents and law enforcement ensured that the two female passengers who sustained physical injuries were immediately rushed to the Karapitiya National Hospital in Galle for urgent medical evaluation. The remaining occupants, including the two minor children, miraculously escaped severe injuries. The traffic division of the Galle Police is currently conducting further investigations into the mishap.
Road Safety Takeaway: This incident highlights the critical dangers of drowsy driving and microsleep during the vulnerable early morning hours between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM when the human body's circadian rhythm induces fatigue. Furthermore, overloading compact hatchback vehiclesβsuch as carrying six passengers in a standard 4-to-5-seater Wagon Rβalters the center of gravity and braking efficiency, drastically increasing the risk of rolling over during sudden maneuvers. Always ensure proper passenger limits and take mandatory rest breaks on long journeys.
