✓ Verified Incident Telemetry
A Suzuki Wagon R travelling towards Galle overturned on the Southern Expressway near the 37.4 km post this morning after crashing into the guard rail, resulting in severe vehicle damage.
This morning, a severe road incident occurred along the Southern Expressway (E01) near the 37.4-kilometre post, involving a grey Suzuki Wagon R (Stingray) travelling towards Galle. According to telemetry and preliminary reports from the scene, the vehicle suddenly lost control, veered off its path, and crashed violently into the steel guard rail before rolling over to its side in the middle of the lane.
The high-impact collision caused extensive structural damage to the mini-crossover. The front bumper, grille, and headlights were completely sheared off and scattered across the asphalt, while the radiator, axle assembly, and right-hand side doors suffered severe crushing. Due to the sudden deceleration and impact force, the vehicle's SRS front airbags deployed instantly, which played a crucial role in preventing severe, life-threatening injuries to the occupants inside.
The accident caused temporary traffic congestion on one lane of the expressway. The Expressway Operations Command Room and traffic police acted swiftly to clear the wrecked vehicle from the lane, restoring normal traffic flow within a short period. No critical casualties were reported, thanks to the swift deployment of safety features.
Road Safety Takeaway: Motorists navigating high-speed corridors like the Southern Expressway must remain vigilant against 'highway hypnosis' and fatigue, which can induce micro-sleeps. Furthermore, drivers of tall-boy design vehicles like the Wagon R must avoid sudden steering manoeuvres at speeds around 100 km/h, as shifting center-of-gravity can easily trigger a rollover. Always wear seatbelts and dial 1969 for expressway emergencies.
