A dramatic motorcycle crash was captured on CCTV in Arugam Bay when a rider attempting to give way to an oncoming three-wheeler collided with a roadside concrete barrier, resulting in minor injuries.
A distressing yet preventable road incident occurred yesterday afternoon, October 31, 2026, at approximately 1:49 PM at a narrow junction in Arugam Bay, Eastern Province. A motorcyclist riding from a minor side road toward an intersection crashed directly into a heavy concrete barrier placed on the roadside after attempting to yield the right-of-way to an oncoming green three-wheeler.
As the rider approached the junction, the green three-wheeler entered the path, prompting the motorcyclist to navigate a sudden evasive maneuver. Although adequate distance and time appeared available to apply the brakes safely, the braking mechanism failed to engage effectively or in time. Consequently, the front wheel of the motorcycle slammed forcefully into the concrete block, which had been positioned to protect roadside infrastructure and property.
The force of the direct impact caused the rear section of the motorcycle to flip violently into the air, launching the rider forward over the handlebars and onto the asphalt surface. Fortunately, due to wearing a fully fastened full-face helmet, the rider avoided catastrophic head trauma and was able to stand up immediately with only minor injuries.
This incident highlights vital road safety lessons for all motorists navigating narrow lanes and congested junctions. When giving way in tight spaces, riders must aggressively reduce speed and bring their vehicles to a complete stop rather than attempting simultaneous steering and braking while distracted by obstacles. Additionally, striking fixed hard barriers like concrete blocks often triggers an immediate somersault or endo effect on two-wheelers. Motorists are urged to maintain calm reflexes, keep fingers on brake levers near intersections, and immediately dial the 1990 Suwa Seriya Ambulance service in the event of an emergency.
