A fatal collision on the Padeniya-Anuradhapura main road in Leedolawewa, Galgamuwa, claimed the life of a motorcyclist on the evening of October 18, 2026, following a reckless multi-vehicle overtaking maneuver.

A tragic road traffic accident occurred on the evening of October 18, 2026, along the Padeniya-Anuradhapura main road in the Leedolawewa area of Galgamuwa, resulting in the instantaneous death of a motorcyclist. The preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcyclist, traveling from Padeniya towards Anuradhapura, attempted a reckless and simultaneous overtaking maneuver past multiple preceding vehicles. During this dangerous attempt, the motorcycle collided head-on into the front right side of an oncoming Isuzu Forward commercial freezer lorry traveling from the opposite direction. Due to the excessive speed and the sheer force of the impact, the motorcycle was completely mangled and left overturned in the middle of the road. The impact also caused severe structural damage to the lorry's front right headlamp, bumper, and mudguard assembly. The violent nature of the crash left the rider with fatal injuries, resulting in his death at the scene. The body of the deceased has been transferred to the Galgamuwa Base Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examinations. The traffic division of the Galgamuwa Police Station has promptly arrested the lorry driver and initiated further legal and technical investigations into the incident. As road safety experts continuously emphasize, attempting to overtake multiple vehicles at once creates a severe blind spot regarding oncoming traffic, often leaving no safe gap to merge back, thereby triggering devastating head-on collisions. Motorcyclists must recognize that collisions with heavy commercial vehicles invariably transfer the entire kinetic energy of the impact directly onto the rider, leading to catastrophic trauma. Motorists are strictly advised never to cross into opposing lanes unless visibility and distance are entirely clear, especially during fading daylight hours when speed and distance estimation become compromised. Accident 1st reminds all road users to exercise extreme caution and adhere to defensive driving principles to prevent such preventable tragedies on our national roadways. In the event of any road emergency, immediately dial the 1990 Suwa Seriya Ambulance Service or the Police emergency hotline at 119.
