A speeding motorcycle crashed into the rear of a halted private bus at the Henegama bus stop along the Ratnapura-Panadura main road, leaving the rider with serious injuries and severe damage to the bike.
A severe road traffic accident occurred in the afternoon on October 24, 2026, at approximately 2:30 PM, along the Ratnapura-Panadura main road near the Henegama bus halt, involving a private passenger bus and a motorcycle.
According to initial telemetry and eyewitness reports, a Lanka Ashok Leyland private bus had halted at the designated bus stop to pick up passengers. A black and red Bajaj Pulsar 150 motorcycle, travelling in the same direction directly behind the bus, failed to maintain a safe stopping distance and slammed heavily into the rear right corner of the heavy vehicle.
The impact was devastating. The front handlebars, headlight assembly, mudguard, and suspension system of the motorcycle were completely shattered, rendering the bike extensively damaged. The rear right body panel and light casing of the bus were also severely dented and distorted due to the force of the collision.
The rider, who suffered critical injuries upon impact, was thrown violently onto the asphalt. Prompt intervention by local residents ensured the injured victim was swiftly rushed to the Horana Base Hospital for emergency medical care. The local traffic police division has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Road Safety Takeaway: Rear-end collisions at bus halts are largely preventable. Motorcyclists and motorists must always maintain a safe following distance and remain vigilant, especially when approaching public transport halts where sudden deceleration is common. Always wear certified full-face helmets and avoid daytime distractions to ensure road safety.
