A harrowing head-on collision was captured on a car's dashcam near the Egodauyana bridge on the Colombo-Galle main road, after a speeding motorcycle traveling down the wrong lane to retrieve a dropped helmet crashed into an oncoming car, leaving two seriously injured.
A severe road traffic accident occurred today (30/10/2026) at approximately 1:30 AM along the Colombo-Galle (A2) main road near the Egodauyana bridge in Moratuwa. The entire sequence of events, highlighting the extreme dangers of reckless riding, was vividly captured on the onboard dashcam of the victimized car.
According to the dashcam footage, the car was proceeding lawfully and steadily along its designated lane. Meanwhile, a red helmet had fallen onto the road from a moving motorcycle. Instead of stopping safely or taking a legal U-turn, the reckless motorcycle rider executed a dangerous maneuver, steering directly into the oncoming, opposing traffic lane at high speed to retrieve the fallen helmet.
Traveling against the flow of traffic, the speeding motorcycle directly smashed into the front fascia of the oncoming car. The immense kinetic impact threw both the rider and the pillion passenger violently onto the car's windshield and subsequently onto the asphalt. Both vehicles sustained extensive structural damages, particularly to the front sections.
Local residents and prompt police intervention ensured the injured rider and passenger were swiftly rushed to the Panadura Base Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Traffic police officers from the Egodauyana Police Station are currently conducting further investigations utilizing the definitive dashcam evidence.
Safety Advisory: Never drive or ride against traffic (wrong-way) under any circumstances to retrieve fallen items. A momentary lapse in securing your helmet properly can lead to fatal life-or-death decisions on the road. Always prioritize defensive driving, maintain proper helmet retention straps, and in case of any emergency, dial the 1990 Suwa Seriya Ambulance Service immediately.
