A tragic road accident near Kelaniya Thorana Junction on November 4, 2026, at 12:13 PM claimed the life of a motorcyclist who attempted risky lane splitting between a car and a heavy container truck.
The fatal incident occurred on November 4, 2026, at approximately 12:13 PM near the busy Kelaniya Thorana Junction, as captured vividly by a trailing vehicle's dashcam. A massive container prime mover and a white motor car were traveling towards Colombo when a motorcyclist attempted risky lane splitting, squeezing through the narrow gap between the two moving vehicles.
As the vehicles approached a pedestrian crossing, the gap narrowed further. The motorcycle clipped either the car or the container truck, causing the rider to lose balance and crash onto the asphalt right in the middle of the lane.
Instantly upon falling, the rider slid beneath the massive dual rear wheels of the container truck, suffering fatal head injuries and dying on the spot. The container driver brought the heavy vehicle to a halt a short distance ahead. Kelaniya and Peliyagoda traffic police divisions immediately launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident, examining the dashcam footage to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
Road Safety Takeaway: Never engage in dangerous lane splitting between heavy vehicles such as containers, tippers, and bowsers. If you cannot see the truck driver in their side mirrors, they certainly cannot see you in their blind spots (No-Zones). Always exercise patience and wait for a clear, safe lane before attempting any overtake.
