A Colombo-bound luxury passenger bus from Jaffna narrowly escaped a catastrophic accident early this morning on the A9 road near the Kilinochchi District General Hospital when its front-right tyre blew out at high speed.
At approximately 2:35 AM today (15/10/2026), Route No. 87 luxury passenger bus operating between Jaffna and Colombo suffered a sudden front-right tyre blowout while transiting the A9 main road directly in front of the Kilinochchi District General Hospital.
Traveling at high speed, the driver lost control of the vehicle immediately following the blowout. The bus veered off the road, plowed across the pedestrian walkway and drainage ditch, and came to a halt after becoming embedded in a mound of sand near a roadside tree and commercial shops. Fortunately, the bus did not roll over or collide head-on with the tree.
Given the early morning hour, the pavement was devoid of pedestrians, preventing a massive tragedy. Passengers on board sustained no serious injuries, and local residents credited the driver's prompt brake control with averting significant casualties.
Road Safety Takeaway: When a steer-axle tyre blows out at high speeds, panic braking can cause the vehicle to overturn. Drivers must maintain a firm, two-handed grip on the steering wheel and utilize engine braking to decelerate safely. Long-distance transport operators must strictly avoid retreaded tyres on steer axles and regularly monitor tyre pressure.
